Native American Rings
Distinctive Style
Rings made by the Native American artist can best be described as having a timeless style and beauty. Proud owners of these distinctive pieces of wearable art use them as a striking and complementary accessory to their wardrobe. Once an owner of a Native American ring, always an owner!
Artists of the Navajo, Zuni, Hopi and some pueblo tribes, primarily make native American Rings. Although each tribe is credited with a distinctive and identifiable style of their own, all share the same artistic techniques. All Native American rings marketed and sold by Native American Jewelers, LLC are 100% sterling silver, fully handcrafted and made entirely in the USA.
Navajo Rings
The Navajo artist is best known for his or her implementation of several techniques. These artistic techniques commonly used include cabochon, appliqué, stampwork, repousse, saw work, file work, high-shine finish, satin finish and, to a lesser extent, overlay. Navajo rings are often bold statements of beauty. Many different types of semi-precious stones, turquoise being the most common, are masterfully used by the artist.
Zuni Rings
Rings made by the Zuni artist, compared to other tribes, tend to be of a more refined look. Semi-precious stones and various shell types are precisely cut and positioned to produce a stunning ring face. Common techniques used by the Zuni include needlepoint, petit point, channel inlay and stone on stone inlay. Various stone and shell types commonly used by the Zuni include, but are not limited to, many different types of turquoise, Mediterranean coral, Acoma jet, white mother of pearl, gold lip mother of pearl and malachite. Zuni rings are often combined with a colorful yet understated beauty that is quite alluring.
Hopi Rings
Hopi artists rarely will use any stones in their designs. Rather, they are masters of intricate overlay. This artistic technique requires the artist to cut out a preconceived design on a sheet of sterling silver. Once the design is fully cut and complete, the artist then overlays and solders this sheet onto another sterling silver sheet to create an impressive 3-D image or design. Although this artful technique can be construed as being of a simpler design, it requires much skill and the end result is no less than amazing! It should be also noted that this overlay technique ascribed to by the Hopi artist typically results in a heavier weighted ring due the use of more sterling silver.
The Ring Shank
Sterling silver rings of all styles have long been a favorite among many lovers of handcrafted Native American jewelry. They are continually sought after, being recognized as unique accessories and additions to wardrobes. There exist several styles of shanks, the portion that wraps around one’s finger and attaches to the face of the ring. The shank may be of a single silver half-round shape, to being made of several silver bands coming together at the bottom, to solid wider bands. Not one style should be construed as being better or more popular. However, it’s important to know each style will fit and support your finger differently.
Determining The Best Fit
Single band shanks tend to fit more snugly and closer to one’s palm. Multiple strand bands will cover a larger area of one’s finger while solid bands will tend to cover an even larger portion. Considering the area of coverage, wider bands will require a little larger size than single shank bands. The correct sizing for multiple shank bands will tend to fall between that needed for the wider and single shank bands. It should be noted that most jewelry stores carry ring sizers that can also be purchased from many local suppliers. If you use a ring sizer and have a question about the reading, please feel free to contact us and we will be happy to assist you.
