Zuni jewelry represents centuries of tradition, technique, and storytelling passed down by generations of skilled Native American artisans. It is known for its striking use of stone inlay, fine silverwork, and precise geometric patterns. At SilverTQ, the Zuni jewelry collection is handmade by talented artists whose work honors both cultural heritage and design excellence. All pieces capture the spirit and beauty of the Zuni legacy.
The Zuni people, one of the Pueblo tribes of the American Southwest, have long been known for their artistic mastery, particularly in the world of jewelry-making. Jewelry has been part of Zuni culture for centuries as a form of adornment and a reflection of tradition, family lineage, and ceremonial value. With access to turquoise, coral, jet, and other stones native to the region, early Zuni artisans began experimenting with unique designs that quickly distinguished their work from other tribes.
By the late 19th century, Zuni artists had refined techniques such as channel inlay, where finely cut stones are fitted into intricate silver settings. Over time, new styles emerged, including needlepoint and petit point, showcasing remarkable attention to detail.
SilverTQ is proud to feature a collection of Zuni jewelry handmade by respected artists whose work reflects a commitment to tradition, quality, and individuality.
Zuni earrings and pendants are known for their refined elegance and symbolic patterns, often incorporating high-grade turquoise, coral, and mother-of-pearl. SilverTQ’s collection includes post and dangle earrings, mosaic pendants, and inlay drop pieces that showcase the precision of Zuni silverwork. You will find pieces with traditional motifs as well as contemporary interpretations, all made by artists who continue to elevate this renowned style. Some of the artists include Harlan Coonsis, Bernadette Wyaco, and Tamara Pinto, each bringing their unique vision to these delicate yet bold pieces.
Bracelets and cuffs are central to traditional Zuni jewelry. The collection at SilverTQ includes a wide variety of handmade styles, from narrow stone row cuffs to elaborate link bracelets and multi-stone clusters. Zuni bracelet designs often feature carefully placed turquoise needlepoint or channel inlay, with silverwork that complements the vibrancy of the stones. Look for pieces by noteworthy artists such as Don Dewa and Derrick and Nichelle Edaakie, whose work mixes traditional technique with exceptional handwork.
Needlepoint and petit point are signature Zuni techniques known for their intricacy and delicacy. Needlepoint involves long and slender stones set in radiating or geometric patterns, while petit point uses small and rounded stones arranged into floral or clustered motifs. These labor-intensive methods require extraordinary skill, making each finished piece a work of art. SilverTQ’s collection includes earrings, pendants, and cuffs that highlight this distinctive artistry.
Zuni inlay jewelry is admired for its precise stonework and vibrant color combination. SilverTQ’s inlay earrings and rings feature finely cut stones like turquoise, jet, coral, and shell, set tightly into a creative design. The resulting mosaics often depict traditional symbols, patterns, and animal figures, all executed with extraordinary detail. These pieces are not only visually stunning but also tell stories passed down through generations.
In addition to their core offerings, SilverTQ carries an evolving selection of unique Zuni jewelry pieces. These include link bracelets with stylized motifs, bolo ties featuring inlaid figures or traditional patterns, and multi-strand necklaces with elaborate centerpieces. SilverTQ takes tremendous pride in choosing each piece for its quality and authenticity.
SilverTQ’s Zuni jewelry collection is built on relationships with artists who dedicate their time to preserving and evolving this meaningful tradition.
Robert and Bernice Leekya were a husband-and-wife silversmithing team from the Zuni Pueblo, celebrated for their beautiful sterling silver and turquoise jewelry. Robert, born in 1934, was the son of the famous carver Leekya Deyuse and began making jewelry in the early 1950s. Together, he and Bernice created bold pieces featuring large turquoise nuggets, often from the famous Kingman mine, as well as coral, set in sterling silver or gold. Their designs blend traditional Zuni styles with striking designs. Because their work is rare and highly valued, each piece stands as a lasting symbol of Zuni heritage and artistry. Sadly, Robert passed away in 2019.
Smokey Gchachu is an award-winning Zuni jewelry maker known for his creative and meaningful designs. He often uses turquoise, coral, spiny oyster, and other natural materials set in sterling silver. Many of his pieces feature reversible designs and Zuni symbols, such as the dragonfly and the snake eye, both of which are often associated with life and fertility. Smokey’s jewelry combines traditional Zuni styles with modern ideas, creating pieces that are both beautiful and practical. You can see his work in the SilverTQ collection, which highlights the true authenticity of his artistry.
Tamara Pinto is known for her stunning needlepoint and carved inlay designs, where elongated turquoise stones form elegant, intricate motifs across cuffs and earrings. Her work is recognized for its balance of detail and wearability, often incorporating complementary silverwork that enhances the visual flow of each piece. As a Zuni artist who learned from generations before her, Tamara’s creations bridge traditional aesthetics with thoughtful, modern execution.
Zuni jewelry is both striking and versatile, making it a perfect companion to a range of styles and occasions. You can layer the pieces for a bold statement or add a single pendant for a subtle touch; with Zuni jewelry, you experience character and heritage in any look.
Here are a few styling tips to get the most out of your pieces:
If you are drawn to jewelry that carries history, meaning, and remarkable artistry, Zuni pieces offer something truly special. SilverTQ strongly believes in honoring the authenticity of each piece and the people who create it. You will find earrings, bracelets, rings, and more, all handmade by respected Native American artisans. Explore our Zuni collection today and find your perfect piece.
Zuni jewelry typically features natural material that reflects the tribe’s connection to the earth. Turquoise is the most recognized stone, valued for its vibrant color and cultural significance. You will also find coral, mother of pearl, jet, and shell, often combined in detailed inlay patterns or stone settings.
Authentic Zuni jewelry is always handmade by artists from the Zuni tribe, using traditional methods passed down through generations. Look for tight and detailed stone inlay often hallmarked by the artist.
You should care for your Zuni jewelry by always storing your pieces in a soft pouch or a lined box to prevent scratches or damage to the inlay stones. Clean only with silver polish and a soft cloth, but don’t use soap, water, or abrasive materials, as they can damage both the stones and the silver.
