Philander Begay is an accomplished Navajo artist whose work honors the rich traditions of Native American jewelry. His pieces are celebrated for their exceptional metalwork, which displays highly detailed symbols. Each of his creations features eye-catching and complex patterns, often rooted in natural elements such as animals and celestial objects. If you are an admirer of intricate details and bold artistic expression, Philander's collection is an ideal choice.
Born in Tuba City, Arizona, in 1982, Philander Begay grew up surrounded by artists in his household. His father, who was raised Hopi, as well as his mother, have had a significant influence on his artistic development. Although Philander was exposed to silversmithing from a young age, he did not consider making it into a career until much later. He initially supported his growing family by working in construction. However, Philander left the industry and turned to silversmithing because it allowed him to stay close to his family. He learned jewelry making from his family, including his well-known cousin Darryl Dean Begay, and mastered various traditional techniques, including tufa stone casting, stonesetting, and saw work.
Philander values his family life and is a devoted husband to Shana'baa and a dedicated father to their five children. Since garnering tremendous success in his career, the renowned silversmith has also introduced the art form to his children. Philander describes his life as a jeweler, a gallery owner, and a family man as "a dream come true."
Philander Begay's jewelry is a testament to established traditions and unique artistry. Admired for his precision in silversmithing and stonework, each piece Philander creates showcases cultural symbolism and techniques that have been passed down through generations.
Philander's bracelets are bold statement pieces made from sterling silver, at times featuring meaningful animal figures created using appliqué. His designs often incorporate high-quality turquoise or coral, creating a striking appearance. Some pieces display intricate patterns with an oxidized background for depth and contrast. Each bracelet is meticulously handmade, ensuring both durability and comfort.
Philander's pendants are handmade from high-quality sterling silver, and some display vibrant gemstones. His signature designs include intricate stone inlays, and some of the pieces are reversible. The pendants also often feature symbolic elements such as dragonflies, spiderwebs, and mazes. Whether you pair a pendant with casual attire or style a statement outfit, this jewelry is endlessly versatile.
Philander brings his artistic twist to his bolo ties. Each piece is designed with unique symbolism, often displaying natural or abstract elements. Some of his popular bolo ties feature animals, including turtles, spiders, horned toads, and eagles, which may be accented by turquoise, coral, opal, and lapis lazuli.
SilverTQ offers the finest collection of handmade jewelry by the talented Native American artist Philander Begay. He employs deeply rooted techniques to create his masterful pieces, blending them with his contemporary artistic flair.
We acquire all jewelry directly from Native American artists themselves and carefully assess each piece’s quality. Like many other artists, Philander Begay's handmade jewelry also often displays his hallmark. You will often see the artist’s initials "PBB" stamped on the back of his jewelry.
To extend the longevity of your Native American jewelry, avoid exposing it to direct sunlight, moisture, and chemicals. Clean your jewelry using separate cloths for the metals and the stones. Silver polish helps tarnished silver, but never use any cleaners, including water, on turquoise. Store your jewelry in a jewelry box or a soft pouch, making sure the pieces do not touch to prevent scratches and tangles.
Philander Begay's exceptional work has earned him many awards, including the Artists' Choice Peer Award for Exceptional, Innovative Work in Any Media at the Santa Fe Indian Market and the Best of Division Award at the Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair and Market.
